REVIEW: Demi Lovato – Confident.

It’s not surprising to me that “Confident”, the second single from Demi Lovato’s upcoming album of the same name, was initially planned to be the lead single. This era Demi has, with absolute and total conviction, embodied the word confident with every move she has made. It’s difficult not to take the opinion, that her and her team made the wrong choice in switching “Confident” out as the first single in favour of “Cool for the Summer”.

The first single from an album doesn’t always necessarily have to be the best song from an album, it just has to make the biggest statement. It should set the tone for what’s to come, and given the album title and the balls-to-the-wall, fuck it all attitude that has shone through the material we’ve been given so far, “Confident” would have done that perfectly.

Whereas her contemporary Selena Gomez faded into the background of her latest single put up against a bold instrumental and Charli XCX background vocals, Demi has the power and personality to stand tall against an even stronger finger snapping instrumental, her prowess announced by stunning brass horns at the beginning of the song. “Confident” is an amazing mixture of a Christina Aguilera “Burlesque” number and a Jessie J song, only without Jessie J’s over singing and arrogance. Demi struts the fine line between confident and arrogant but comes out shining on top.

The song isn’t perfect though with the production occasionally being a little over-bearing and perhaps the chorus feeling a little repetitive, but Demi’s absolute determination to make this the song every pop music listener plays just before doing anything where they might need a boost of confidence is commendable, not everyone would be able to pull something this bold off quite as well as her. She did a similar thing with “Cool for the Summer” though so I guess at this point it shouldn’t be surprising.

Regardless of whether it should have been the first single or not, “Confident” embodies the attitude Demi seems to be going for with her 5th studio album and is a strong second single. With a sexy Burlesque-inspired music video and performances this could be a defining moment for Demi in her pop career.
